The English Toy Spaniel is known by many names ~
King Charles Spaniels, Charlies, ETS, Royal Spaniels ~ but do not
confuse them with the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that is
currently very popular. The Charlies are a rare breed and are very
hard to find.
For a history of the breed or the AKC standard,
please refer to
etsca.org. A favorite short description of this spaniel comes
from the past president of the King Charles Spaniel Club of the
United Kingdom and the author of the book "Toy Dogs and Their
Ancestors." Lady Wentworth wrote in her book that: This Spaniel is a
companion par excellence. Once you are owned by one, no other dog
will satisfy you. There undying devotion to "their person" is
enchanting. Mrs. C. R. Fieldhouse, bred, owned and showed Charlies
in Australia. She liked to share this devotion when she lectured on
the breed. She made this comment: In this little spaniel the King of
England found a brave companion, an affectionate friend and a loving
heart who would not willingly stray from the King's presence." If
you are chosen by an English Toy Spaniel you are indeed lucky. But
beware, this "comforter Spaniel" will invade your heart and make you
goofy in love.
